Camping on Tassie's west coast

Last weekend, Dave and I decided to make the most of having a free weekend, and headed over to the west coast of Tassie to camp for the night. We loaded up the car on Saturday morning, Moose and all, and made our way over to the west coast.

We started off with a breakfast stop in Wynyard at Bruce's Cafe, where Moose was a big hit with the staff and customers. After filling up on the breakfast board (for me) and the mushrooms on toast with egg and haloumi (for Dave), we continued on our drive to Arthur River.

We stopped off along the way at Peggs Beach to give Moose a run, and then at Marrawah, a beach that is famous for its big wave surfing. Unfortunately there were no surfers in the water when we were there, but we did have a bit of an explore around the rocky landscape.

We reached Arthur River at about 3pm, and after chatting to someone from Parks and Wildlife Service about the nearby camp spots, we decided that we would camp at Nelson Bay, a secluded beach that is about 20 minutes south of Arthur River. When we arrived there, I decided to go for a bit of a surf (though unfortunately due to the combination of little to no waves, the cold water and Moose's distressed barking as he watched me go into the ocean with my surfboard for the first time, I didn't stay in for very long).

After getting out of the water, we set up our tent and made a campfire, before heating up some soup and cooking some fresh damper for dinner as the sun set in the distance.

Unfortunately the beautifully warm and calm afternoon turned into quite a chilly and windy night, which meant we didn't have the best night's sleep (coupled with the fact that Moose was allowed to sleep in the tent, which was very exciting for him, but not so conducive to a deep sleep for us). We woke up the next morning to a bit of rain, so thought we'd end the camping trip there and made our 2 hour journey home.

Even though the weather took a bit of a turn for the worse, it was just so lovely being able to get out into nature and explore a part of Tasmania that we had not seen before.

  1. You need to be aware of the tide when beach camping. It can also be very windy, which is why de Montigny recommends a two- or three-season tent to prevent sand from blowing in. It also tends to rain more on the beach, so a tarp is quite useful. “Beach and The Camping Companionattract a lot of animals,” adds de Montigny.

  2. It’s really simple to temporarily set up a sleepy hammockon your travels. You’ll have to use the two trees method, using a lightweight but strong micro-rope that has an adjustable locking pin. Just wrap it around the tree and lock into place, ensuring that it’s nice and secure.

We help out in food preparation where my mother has assembled most ingredients in zip lock bags for easy pouring on pans - it was easy! I love the canned meat which we cook with eggs and the easy desserts that we make. For more ideas you can try with your family, see: http://backpackingmastery.com/food/camping-breakfast-ideas.html
