Cascade Brewery, Hobart

Located just a few minutes' drive south of Hobart's CBD, Cascade Brewery is Australia's oldest operating brewery, and is a beautiful spot to visit if you are looking to do some beer tasting on a brewery tour, or if you are just after somewhere to sit in the sun for lunch and a drink.

We decided to head here for a late lunch on Saturday, given that it was a beautiful sunny winter's day and that they allow dogs in their gardens, so was a great spot to head to with Moose. We arrived close to 2pm, and we were lucky to find a table outside among all the other Tasmanians and tourists enjoying the brewery on a Saturday afternoon. After having a quick look at the menu, I decided to order a mulled cider and a chicken chermoula salad, while Dave got a tasting paddle of beers and a beef and stout pie.

Despite the number of people there, the service was very fast (not to mention friendly, particularly towards Moose) and we had our meals within about 15 minutes of ordering. The marinated chicken salad was very fresh and flavoursome with mixed greens, tomato, lime, cucumber and sticky lemon aioli, and Dave loved the tender beef pie served alongside some mint pea puree and Paris mash.

On one of our previous visits to the Brewery, we loved trying the stout ice cream, so were very keen to get some for dessert this time as well, and also couldn't go past a serve of the sticky date pudding. While the ice cream wasn't as caramelised and stout-like as it has been previously, it was still nice and creamy, and the sticky date pudding with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream was an indulgent and delicious end to the meal.

After lunch, we went for a bit of a wander around the Cascade heritage gardens, which have beautiful views of Mt Wellington to the south and Hobart's waterfront to the north.
If you ever find yourself looking for a sunny spot to visit for some delicious pub-style food not far out of Hobart's CBD, I'd definitely recommend checking out Cascade Brewery. They also run tours of the brewery everyday if you are looking for a fun activity to do with friends on the weekend.
