Hobart's 10 best takeaway options during lockdown

As someone who loves to dine out on a regular basis, these past few weeks have thrown a bit of a spanner in the works in respect of that matter. However, I have put my mind to the task of discovering the best takeaway/delivery services available in Hobart and its surrounds, so that I can still get my weekly fix of a meal or two cooked by someone other than myself or Dave. My top 10 picks are set out below.

1. Ti Ama

If you're looking for the best pizza in Hobart, Ti Ama have you covered. Not only do they do an array of freshly made pizzas (with the most authentically Italian doughy base and delicious topping combinations - our faves include the BBQ bird, finer things and notorious PIG), they also have a range of pastas, sides and dessert specials - if you can get your hands on the caramel slice or the snickers slice, you won't be disappointed.

2. Templo

Another excellent Italian option is Templo, which is an extremely popular restaurant that ordinarily doesn't offer takeaway options, however over these past few weeks they have done so, with their menu changing each week. I highly recommend their beef lasagne, any of their house made pastas, and their Sicilian apple cake for dessert.

3. The Lounge by Frogmore Creek

Another restaurant that does not usually offer takeaway is The Lounge by Frogmore Creek. We were drawn to this option as they offer a slightly different service, where you have the option to select pre-made menu items that are delivered to your doorstep (even to where we live 15-20 minutes out of the CBD - a rare thing in Hobart!), which you then heat up when you're ready to eat. We opted for the lamb shoulder with potato gratin, buttered carrots and broccolini, and also ordered a beef and pinot pie to have for lunch the next day (along with a slice of chocolate cheesecake and a lemon tart). We couldn't fault any of the items and would highly recommend if you don't want to leave your home.

4. Mr Burger

A cheap and very cheerful option is Mr Burger. While Mr Burger is a pretty casual style venue, which is ordinarily open for dine in or takeaway, I'd say it is one of the best places for a burger in Hobart. My favourite is the Mr Meat (beef, cheese, lettuce, bacon, caramelised onions, pickles, BBQ sauce and mayo) and a side of their fries, along with one of their choc malt or vanilla milkshakes, makes for the perfect weekend meal.

5. Bar Wa Izakaya

If you're looking for delicious Japanese in Hobart, Bar Wa Izakaya is a fantastic option. While they don't offer your typical Japanese food of sushi, they do offer incredible dishes such as crispy pork gyoza, bluefin tuna sashimi, tonkotsu ramen, shiro miso braised mushrooms, and yakisoba, just to name a few.

6. Shambles Brewery

Located next to Bar Wa Izakaya is Shambles Brewery, which offers delicious burgers, fries and takeaway specialty beers. When we got takeway from here, we went with the burger meal deal for $50 which included 2 burgers of your choice, 2 serves of fries, and a 4-pack of beer of your choice. If you're not in the mood for a burger, they also offer fried chicken, chicken wings, popcorn chicken, arancini, buffalo fries, loaded cheeseburger fries...all the good things really.

7. Komatsu

If we are ever craving some good quality sushi, Komatsu is our go-to. They are incredibly friendly at Komatsu, and their presentation and quality of sushi is fantastic. Our favourite choices are the rainbow roll (with crab, avocado, topped with salmon, tuna, avocado and prawn), the crazy salmon roll (with spicy salmon, avocado, topped with grilled salmon and fish roe), and the monster shrimp roll (with tempura prawn, avocado, topped with shrimp and spring onion). They also do amazing gyoza and vegetable tempura.

8. Zero 81 Napoli

If you leave south of Hobart and don't want to venture up the Southern Outlet for your dinner, Zero 81 Napoli is an excellent Italian restaurant located in Kingston (right on the beachfront). They offer delicious, authentic Italian food, and our favourites include the vesioto pizza, the diavola pizza and the paccheri al ragu della nonna (an incredible large tube pasta with slow cooked beef ragu).

9. Willie Smiths Apple Shed

Another option for those living south of Hobart is Willie Smiths Apple Shed. Located in the Huon Valley, Willie Smiths is famous for its cider, however they provide a range of delicious meals as well. Our favourites include the apple shed arancini, the mushroom and goats cheese veggie toastie, the Cygnet smoked ham and cheese toastie, and the apple shed's famous apple pie.

10. Mt Gnomon Farm

My final suggestion is a little different, as Mt Gnomon Farm is actually located on the north-west coast, however since the lockdown laws have been in place, they have been offering home delivered meats, bread, fruits, vegetables, and bottles of wine (to name a few) all across Tasmania. We ordered some meat, fruit and vegetables a few weeks ago and just ordered a second delivery for this past week. Their produce is incredibly fresh, and ever since we left the north-west coast, we missed being able to visit their farm in person for their local produce, however this is the next best thing.
