A "casual degustation" in Darlinghurst

Last week, my husband and I decided to take advantage of the rare opportunity of both being free on a Thursday night, so we headed into Darlinghurst for dinner.  Our plan was to grab a quick dinner at Biru Biru followed by dessert at Gelato Messina next door.  However, that "quick dinner" swiftly transformed into what I like to call a "casual degustation in Darlingurst", due to our picking and choosing of a range of courses at four bars/restaurants (all within approximately 20 metres of each other).

We started off at Li'l Darlin for a cocktail - my Fairy Floss Martini was a rather girly option in comparison to the Spicy Old Fashion that my husband ordered (one friend commenting on the below photo with the suggestion that someone had removed barbie's hair and placed it in my drink).

As Biru Biru was not opening for another half hour, we figured we may as well order another round, but that we should probably have a snack to accompany the Sazerac and Blood Orange Margarita, so along came the first course of the degustation - mini cheeseburgers on brioche buns with watercress and dijon mustard mayonnaise.

Ready for something a bit more substantial, we moved next door to Biru Biru for some gyoza and sushi.  While the original plan was to have dinner there, we were quite envious of those exiting Beach Burrito Company across the road (who we watched as we consumed our cocktails). So, we made the decision to stick with just two options at Biru Biru - the pan-fried pork gyoza (degustation course #2) and an "Ocean" roll (degustation course #3).

Once these were devoured (a brief 15 minutes later), across the road we ventured to Beach Burrito Company, where we shared the Mucho Fajita Burrito (degustation course #4). Our waitress was rather confused by the fact that we were only ordering one burrito between the two of us (little did she know that this was our fourth "course" for the evening).

We were feeling quite full at this stage, but it is extremely unwise and unadvisable to go to Darlinghurst without a visit to Gelato Messina. Being an avid follower of Messina on Facebook and Instagram, I was aware that the Dessert Bar had recently released the "Jasper" - a cone filled with choc fudge cake soft serve, maltesers, milo cake, milo ganache, milo, choc fudge and torched meringue (degustation course #5).

Suffice to say, I was in need of a 5km run the next morning.

  1. Mmm..yummm! This is my kind of degustation (may or may not include drink with Barbie's ripped out hair)!

And "but it is extremely unwise and unadvisable to go to Darlinghurst without a visit to Gelato Messina." made me laugh out loud. They need to give you at least a free 500ml tub for that kind of review.

    1. Thanks very much :) yes, I would definitely not be opposed to the offer of a free 500ml tub of Messina!
