Exploring Boat Harbour Beach and Stanley

Last weekend, while Dave was working a Saturday shift, I decided to throw on my walking shoes and explore our new surroundings. Before moving to Burnie, a lot of people had told me that I had to visit Boat Harbour Beach, a gorgeous spot about 20 minutes north-west of Burnie. I had also heard that Stanley is a beautiful town, about an hour from Burnie, and in particular, The Nut was worth hiking up for 360 degree views of the coast. So, these two spots were high on my list of places to tick off.

My first stop was Boat Harbour Beach, which was incredible. It is an absolutely stunning beach, with white sand, clear blue water, and boulders scattered along the sand (which reminded me quite a bit of the Bay of Fires on Tasmania's east coast). Even on a Saturday, the beach was barely occupied.

There is a cafe on the beach, Harvest and Cater, located at the surf club, which was where the majority of the Saturday morning beach-goers were perched. After strolling along the beach for half an hour, I headed to the cafe for a hot chocolate while admiring the incredible views.

I then decided to drive another 40 minutes or so north-west to Stanley. Stanley is a small town located near the tip of the north-west coast. The main tourist attraction is The Nut (mentioned above), which was streaming with visitors when I arrived. You can choose to hike up to the top, which is a short but very steep walk (it took about 15 minutes to reach the top), or you can take the chairlift up. Once you reach the top, there is a flat walking track which gives you incredible views of the coast.

After exploring the top of The Nut, I thought I'd head down to the beach to have some lunch (a good old tuna and avocado sandwich made with freshly baked bread from the farmers' markets I picked up that morning), before stopping at the Chocolate Gallery and Cafe in Stanley for a scoop of their homemade honeycomb and butterscotch ice cream.

Despite seeing so many amazing parts of Tassie that day, I was home by about 3pm, giving me some time to relax for the rest of the afternoon. I am still amazed at how much beauty there is on our doorstep in Tassie, and I am excited to explore more parts of this amazing place in the months to come.
